You know, as being an individual of most intelligent species in the earth (i.e human), I also have similar feeling that rest of the individuals do. Here, I am talking about "receiving an award in career building phase". This year at annual meeting of Entomological Society of America (11-14 Nov., 2012, Knoxville, TN). I received 2nd place award in poster competition category. The meeting was quite intense at least for me because I had given two talks next day after the student reception. All entomology graduate students know about student reception party at ESA :). Plus, it was great to see (if not meet) ~3000 entomologists. "Nepal Overseas Entomologists" had organized a conference this year too. We also had nice party/gathering of Nepalese Entomologists who were at meeting.
Sigma Xi Award Ceremony May 15, 2012 My family (I, my wife and my daughter) went to Blacksburg on 5th April in award reception ceremony organized by Sigma-Xi Award Ceremony (Virginia Tech Chapter)-2012. I was selected for a research award from Sigma Xi for a category "PhD research award-2012". Below are some pictures from that moment VVA meeting and fire alarm!! February 4, 2012
Yesterday, We (Dr. Bergh and I) went to Omni hotel, Charlottesville, Virginia to give our talks on grape root borer in VVA (Virginia Vineyard Association) annual meeting. Majority of the audiences were vineyard managers/owners.~150 people were there. Conference room was fairly big with two big screens in two front corners, audiences were in four rows facing front. Wow!! that was big crowd for me, isn't it? I did not have experience to give a talk interacting with two screens. I was somehow nervous in the beginning but later it was fine. Surprisingly!! after about 5 minutes of my talk, the fire alarm went off. I was in dais and was speaking via microphone. But, fire alarm completely dominated my voice, of course you all know that!!. We went outside for about 15 minutes and later they solved that issue anyway. We all came back to the conference room and again I revived my talk. Again, it went well. I was participating first time on that meeting. I liked it. I talked with grape growers. I was familiar with some of them, but not all. That fire alarm during the talk will remind me the VVA meeting forever!!. Then we hit the road back to Winchester. Dr. Bergh proposed a family restaurant "Mrs. Rowe's Restaurant" located at Staunton (on the way to Winchester) for supper. All the food items including dessert were really awesome, we enjoyed. Dr. Bergh was there before too, but I was not. We came back to home about 9PM. As always, Sirjana and Anushma were waiting me. That was nice day!!! Posted by Jhalendra Rijal. Posted In : Experience and Life Proud myself! June 20, 2011 In retrospect of my professional life in Nepal, I spent three years (June 2006-June 2009) as a Plant Protection Officer (Govt Gazetted III Officer) in Nepal. I feel proud myself by the two significant works that I experienced at that time besides my own plant protection related responsibilities. One, I directly involved in a 'citizenship distribution team' and at least 711 Nepalese people has their citizenship certificates with my signature on it. Second, I was deployed as an 'election officer' of Constituent Assembly Election in an election booth of very rural area of Sankhuwasava district. I accomplished that job without having any issue. I remember, I with my election teammates walked throughout the night with a torch light to bring the ballot boxes to district headquarter, Khandbari. This election was a milestone for transforming Maoist insurgency into a peace process in Nepal. Within very short duration of professional life I did those two tasks which make me feel proud today. During the later hours of our fun time, we saw a plant (I don't know name of it, pic.) with some branches full of caterpillars (they got 5 pairs pseudolegs). The interesting feeding habit of that caterpillar is that they congregated together in one or two branches first and after finishing all leaves, they moved into another twig and so on. Because of that habit, some branches had already without leaves while few twigs were with full of caterpillars feeding. The aggregated nature of caterpillars might prevent them from potential danger by predators and parasitoids. |
