Dr. Jhalendra Rijal
Area Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor (2015-Present)
Jhalendra was born in Nepal. He completed his High School in 1997 and Intermediate degree in Agriculture (I.Sc. Ag.) from Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS)/Tribhuvan University in 1999. He completed his Bachelor degree (B Sc. Ag.) in 2004 and Master's Degree in Entomology in 2006 from IAAS/Tribhuvan University, Nepal. He served as a Plant Protection Officer (Gazetted III Officer) under Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Government of Nepal for three years. Driven by his enthusiasm to involve in entomological research and innovation, he came to the United States and started his PhD in Entomology at Virginia Tech in 2009. During his academic and professional life in Nepal, he had opportunities to organize and deliver practical workshops, meetings and trainings on integrated pest management, organic pest management and other plant protection related issues to the stakeholders, and had also actively participated in different regional and national level seminars, presentations and talk programs. Besides, he got teaching experience as a Lecturer (part-time) at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science/Tribhuvan University and as a Teaching Assistant at Virginia Tech. Before joining UC Cooperative Extension, Dr. Rijal completed post-doctoral work with Dr. Larry Godfrey working on insect pests of peppermint in the northern California, and Bagrada bug in Salinas Valley, California.
